How to Factor in an SSI Payment Reduction

Your monthly amount is calculated by subtracting monthly countable income from the maximum federal amount.

Income is defined by the Social Security Administration (SSA) as anything you receive during a calendar month that can be used to meet your needs for food or shelter.

  • Income can be cash or in-kind.
  • In-kind income is not cash, but rather it is food or shelter, or something you can use to get food or shelter.
  • Countable income is the amount remaining after removing all items that are not income, and applying all appropriate exclusions to items that are income.

What Are Income Exclusions?

Generally speaking, income is an item an individual can use for food or shelter. But not everything you receive is considered income.

To verify what the SSA considers as income exclusions, contact one of our agents today to ensure that you are obtaining the maximum amount you are eligible to receive.

Principal earned income exclusions:

  • The first $65 per month plus one-half of the remainder.
  • Impairment-related work expenses of the disabled.
  • Income set aside or being used to pursue a plan for achieving self-support.
  • The first $30 of irregular income received in a quarter.

Principal unearned income exclusions:

  • The first $20 per month.
  • Income set aside or being used to pursue a plan for achieving self-support.
  • State or locally funded assistance based on need.
  • Rent subsidies under HUD programs and the value of food stamps.
  • The first $60 of irregular income received in a quarter.

For 2021, if an individual has monthly earnings of $1,310 or more, then the person will not meet initial eligibility requirements for SSI disability benefits.
