Social Security Disability Options During the COVID-19 Health Crisis

by | Aug 22, 2023 | SSD Approval Process

This is a difficult time for communities around the globe, as the coronavirus (COVID-19) has impacted the lives of many in countless ways. Because of the prevalence of COVID-19, help for your Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits claim may be necessary now more than ever.

In this article, we have outlined the key points from the Social Security Administration (SSA) to help those with SSD claims and those receiving benefits.

Remember, do your part to reduce the spread of the virus. Practice good hygiene, utilize social distancing methods, and remain in your home if you or a family member displays symptoms of illness. Pair these practices with relaxation and calming techniques to cope with the heightened stress at this time. Together, we can make a difference in our communities.

Social Security Administration Suspensions for COVID-19

The SSA has suspended the following workloads until further notice:

  • Paused processing and collection of overpayments.
  • Not conducting organization or individual representative payee accountings.
  • Suspended the start or completion of any current medical continuing disability reviews. Therefore, you are instructed not to request any information from your doctors at this time. The SSA will follow up with you for any necessary medical evidence once the COVID-19 healthy emergency subsides.

Additionally, as of Tuesday, March 17, 2020, all Social Security offices are closed to the public for in-person service until further notice.

SSD Benefits Payments Continuing

If you are enrolled in Direct Deposit, you will continue to receive your monthly benefit amount. If you are receiving your payment by mail, please visit the United States Postal Service website for the latest updates on their action to mitigate COVID-19. You can also visit the SSA website to sign up for Direct Deposit.

No benefits will be suspended or discontinued during this time. Any notice or call you may receive about the suspension of benefits is fraudulent and not from the Social Security Administration.

How to Contact the SSA

If you are scheduled for a hearing, the SSA will aim to offer you a hearing by phone. You will still be able to contact your local SSA office in one of the following methods:

All deadlines to provide documentation and other information will be extended wherever possible until the public health emergency subsides.
