Who Qualifies for Children’s Benefits?
An eligible child can be biological, adopted, or a legal ward considered to be a dependent under the claimant. The dependent must be unmarried and meet one of the following criteria:
- Younger than age 18;
- A full-time student (no higher than grade 12) between 18-19 years old;
- 18 or older with a disability that began before age 22.
Dependent grandchildren or step-children may also qualify. This is granted they are considered a dependent and meet one of the following criteria:
- The child’s parents are disabled or deceased;
- Younger than age 18;
- The claimant funded at least half of the child’s support in the year prior to becoming disabled, or the child is younger than one year and the claimant has provided at least half of their financial support since birth.
How Much Can Dependents Receive?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) limits the total amount each family can receive through Social Security Disability benefits.
Each dependent can receive up to 50 percent of the claimant’s total amount, and the limit per family is between 150 and 180 percent of the claimant’s monthly benefits allowance.
This means that if there are multiple dependents, the SSA will reduce the monthly amount of each dependent so that it does not exceed the total limit.
